The diplomats in Brussels may be trying to homogenise us all into super-lite, fat-free Europeans, but the guys of Boom Chicago aren’t going to take this lying down. All the chicanery of the EU and monetary union might seem a trifle dull, but the Netherlands-based troop aim to lighten this load by bringing their certain brand of non-politically correct humour to a politically turgid time.
Mixing scripted scenes with their quick fire improvisation and video imaging, the feisty quintet cut a swathe through the theory of a Europe without boundaries with their quick wit, hilarious observations and boundless enthusiasm. Throw in a couple of topical sketches of questionable taste and a breakaway republic for one member of the audience (dodgy anthem included) and you have one of the best sixty minutes of entertainment youĂll find on this year’s Fringe.
Europe: We’ve Created A Monster!! Is a thoroughly enjoyable show that takes all that’s ridiculous with Europe and throws it back in our faces without a hint of regret. You can but try not to get swept away by this storming performance, but why resist? A united Europe under Boom Chicago will be fun because we can still poke fun at the Belgians.
