Hamlet! The Musical

2001

‘Wow! Unbelievably amazing! Big Cheese’s Hamlet! The Musical is a triumph of epic proportions.

Diluting the Bard’s greatest tragedy into a slick sixty minutes of light-hearted song and dance is no mean feat, but this dynamic five-piece outfit (plus orchestra) carry it off with amazing exuberance. Their enthusiasm for this superb adaptation is contagious and whips the crowd into a frenzy of appreciation.

While the sadness and heartache of the Dane is lost in the giddy carnival of exhilarating theatre, the musical numbers are superb and manage to get across the core themes with tongue firmly in cheek. The style of the score varies greatly and manages to produce numbers that parody musicals and pop music alike alongside a beautiful “To be or not to be” musical soliloquy that would challenge Les Misérables for heart-rending beauty.

If you are only going to see one show this year, make it Hamlet! The Musical. It may be nigh on impossible to get a ticket anymore, but do what ever it takes! Beg, borrow or sell your grandmother, just make sure you get there! Shakespeare will never be the same again!
