The Sitcom Sitcom

2002

Wouldn’t it be great to star in your very own sit-com? Have beautiful, funny friends who never seem to go to work and can hang out with you all day while you enjoy your own employment free existence? Getting girlfriends or boyfriends is your only concern and every week there is an amusing, exciting plot to be had where you get to look cool and funny with your friends. Sounds like bliss, eh? Unfortunately The Sitcom Sitcom falls short of this utopia.

Clark Greengage is presented with his own sitcom for his 21st birthday and has to go through the rigor of finding other characters and a plot line to make his sitcom life complete. This is the basis of the play , which was originally written for radio. The characters are colourful and wacky, but you get the feeling that this is to compensate for the lack of humour in the rest of the show.

The show is an hour long, and boy does it drag. The ‘jokes’ are bad, the costumes are tawdry and I couldn’t have cared less about any of the characters. The piece just did not translate well onto the stage. Most of the characters, especially Greengage are horribly irritating and do not develop as the play progresses, even in the most superficial way. I was embarrassed for the cast of this production, who gave it their all, but ultimately couldn’t make it amusing, struggling to make the screwball antics watchable. It’s a stinker! See it at your peril!
