When one is in the position of regularly seeing shows at the Edinburgh Festival, they take on a hope of stumbling across a show which is truly inspired, or different where one feels they are truly witnessing a rising talent. In other words: something special. This reviewer was in such a position tonight.
Reginald D. Hunter is an unstoppable, hilariously outrageous comedy force, and is indeed something very special. This stand up routine is peppered with philosophy and a level headed observations of society, both funny and astute. What is truly inspiring and quite comforting about this show is that while you spend most of the show incapacitated with laughter, you also leave feeling that you just may have learned something through this witty and outspoken performance.
Hunter does feel like more than a stand up comedian, he also seems to feel the need to spread his point of view, or the ëtruthí, which is as intelligent and thoughtful as it is amusing. The fresh and resonant material, jumping from current affairs to sex, is never sterile and shows a flair for drawing he audience in and making them confidants.
The fact that we are not seeing this man on our television screens is a crime against comedy. Such a large talent and personality needs a larger audience. There are certainly pretenders to the stand up throne this year, but they should all make way for Hunter. He’s the real deal. See him now!
