Phil Kay - Like a Metaphor

2003

Phil Kay is back in Edinburgh with a big bundle of hilarity to entertain the masses. With his own brand of fascinating observation and gripping storytelling, delivered is his own unique style that spray paints the images across your mind, this promised to be one of the funniest, most entertaining show of the festival.

From his entrance the audience was immediately engaged with a little light abuse and banter, before Kay moved smoothly and seamlessly into the real meat of the show. The tales of joy and woe were recanted with such flair and brilliant timing that the audience could do little to help themselves collapsing into fits of hysterics.

From the offset the jokes came rapidly and gathered pace until laughs became a constant wave of laughter, as the frenzied barrage of words and noises swept over us.

Unfortunately there were a couple of instances when the momentum was lost as Kay gathered his thoughts. This broke the continuity and the dropped the pace dramatically, causing a rift and giving the show a slightly disjointed edge. That said, no real damage was done and it’s safe to say that Kay is back on form. He gives a vibrant performance and leaves the audience feeling exhausted, but satisfied that they’d had pleasure of bearing witness to a fine performance of natural comedy.

4/5
