David Mamet’s Pulitzer prize winning play Glengarry Glen Ross delves into a world of desperation and double dealing.
Following four salesmen as they battle to be top dog in the company sales test, the play portrays the depths that people will go to in order to succeed. There are no rules that can’t be broken, no situation that can’t be fixed with a lie, and nobody who isn’t there to be double crossed.
Starting off with what at first appears to be a series of individual storylines soon interlink with consequences for all, as the character’s futures at the company come under threat. Hats off to UCLU Encore who have captured the anxiety of the characters perfectly through some powerful performances. As each plunges themselves deeper into the mire, the tension, both individually, and as a collective, continues to rise until boiling point is reached.
It is hard to find fault with this impressive version of Mamet’s classic, and when you do it is purely nit-picking. It can be said that the cast are perhaps a bit on the youthful side to portray characters of such long standing, but this is a minor quibble that doesn’t really hamper the production.
Since it is peppered with strong language, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want an assured, top quality show Glengarry Glen Ross should be near the top of your list.
