Steve Rawlings may have taken steps to compensate his audience in case things go wrong, but you have to hope he’s protected himself in case the show flops. It’s not that he’s bad, quite the opposite actually, it’s just he’s not doing anything particularly new.
Admittedly you rarely see oral ping-pong juggling or modeling balloon swallowing, but the rest of Rawling’s antics are displayed on the Mile everyday, and for nothing if you’re cheap. The knowledge that so many others are juggling flaming clubs as competently elsewhere robs him of his edge and leaves the show somewhat flat.
As it stands this show is entertaining enough. There are some really impressive tricks and some wicked banter, but you can’t help but wish that he’d explore his adult material a bit further and utilise sidekick Dave Brown a bit more.
