Little Shop Of Horrors

2003

This is a more than able production of this cult musical, with strong male and female vocals and performance. It’s difficult to go wrong with something as well known and loved as this show and it is carried off nicely here, the accents and costumes are terrific and the infamous plant itself is well presented. The only real problem is the audience. Given the lateness and location of the production, the presence of large amounts of alcohol and girls in skimpy costumes made the whole thing feel more like a strip club at times. No amount of professionalism could really have saved the actors from being distracted by the shouts and general atmosphere of the audience. And of course, it does also tend to make the rest of the audience quite uncomfortable as well. Which is really a shame, because although the production does not crest any new heights, or present some major new talent, the company has taken extremely likeable material and turned it into an extremely likeable musical and achieved what any show is going for – entertainment. Despite these hiccups and a little discrepancy in the sound quality throughout, we get a pleasant production which will suit any lovers of the musical.
