Matt Blaize

2004

With our national obsession of tabloids, reality TV and celebrity scandal, there are few who could argue that we don’t live in a spiritually devoid society. Matt Blaize doesn’t fall into this minority. Indeed, he is far too aware of his own emptiness and is longing to share his attempts to stem the directionless wanderings of a West Indian/English Gen Xer.

Put simply, Blaize is about addictions - alcohol and sex to be precise - and, despite risking falling into a self-righteous and preachy groove, is keen to share his story and triumphs. Along the way he gets deep and personal but manages to shy away from self-indulgence, thanks to his ability to break from his tale and really engage with the audience.

In fact, it is this ability - a true embodiment of cabaret performance - that helps give him the edge. Not only is he sharp, slick and sexy but Blaize is also extremely likable and at ease with the Edinburgh crowd. It seems unlikely that he’d be able to keep the baying hoards at Late and Live satisfied but with this small enthusiastic audience he excels.

Blaize is clearly delighted with his newfound sobriety and, if this level of passion continues through his career, he is definitely one to look out for in the future.
