Genetics for Blondes

2004

Genetics For Blondes Upon entering the Drawing Room at the Assembly Rooms to see the cast sitting on stage, a singular thought filled my mind… ‘Oh my god, it’s the Stepford Wives!’ - these ladies are a retro dream in their Technicolor dresses and big blonde hair.

The show takes the form of a factually accurate genetics lecture, backed up with live experiments. This lesson is anything but mundane as our four blonde would-be-tutors are on hand to spice up the subject with overly personal anecdotes and camper than camp harmonies.

Proceedings start off well but it struggles a bit as it progresses as some dialogue and harmonies are repeated once too often. The acting also goes slightly off the rails on a few occasions when one of the tutors appears to get enraged about some cruel twist of fate or biology.

On the whole though, the show is an entertaining one and you cannot help but like the actresses, who are quite literally the embodiment of sweetness and light. The true strength of their performance is in the audience participation and interaction that they indulge in. There is an unfortunate lull about three quarters of the way through but the girls manage to rescue it and close with a spectacular finale that finishes the performance perfectly.

3/5
