Glenn Wool - Relax

2004

How do we make people laugh? Jokes. Jokes about sodomy and religion; disparaging remarks about ones own girlfriend, perhaps? Smoking; quitting; the trials of domestic life. All of which is included in the Glenn Wool set, and although many microphones could probably recite it without the aid of a comedian, we all know “it’s not the size of your mic, it’s what you do with it that counts that counts”.

Fortunately, Wool has plenty of personality. Lucky for him too. because on this rainy Thursday night most of Edinburgh are indoors. While naturally endearing and perhaps somewhat vulnerable in his ways, Wool always manages to make you feel you are standing beside him laughing at the world, rather than slightly beneath him. Striding to the stage bearing more than a passing resemblance to Steve Zahn (Happy, Texas; Out of Sight), Wool seems edgy, but after we snigger at his thermometer gags (sex and drugs) he settles in.

There is the peace of a man reformed in Wool; saved from the world of drugs and ready to settle down and get himself a mortgage and a nice cup of tea! Wool is funny, though. There isn’t really enough meat to ‘kill’ tonight, but his edge still cuts.

3/5
