Pig Iron in FLOP

2004

I came to this show thinking I knew what to expect. The basic premise - three women accidentally break the world and somehow have to put it back together- seemed simple enough; but still, I was dumbfounded. This play was like nothing I have ever seen before, and to be quite frank, had I not read the blurb giving an outline of the story I’m not sure I would have been certain quite what was going on. This, however, matters not.

Using elements of clowning, mime and dance the performance is dazzling and intensely physical. All movements are exquisitely executed and brilliantly observed; each performer represents a particular female stereotype - through the coquettish and flirtatious vixen figure to the mischievous tomboy - each draws in and toys with the audience so that in the end there is a feeling of joyous camaraderie.

The whole performance is incredibly tight and polished, and the music and lighting effects, which are so integral to the play, are perfectly timed. In the end, it matters little whether you follow the story or not - certainly the pleasure comes not from that but from the vibrancy of the performance itself; performances which are outstanding and which manage to transmute enthusiasm for their art to the audience who leave energised and refreshed by such a unique experience.

4/5
