Trying to fill a theatre on a glorious Fringe Sunday is nigh on impossible, especially after a week of rain, so many acts haven’t bothered and have cancelled their shows.
Four Sets of Lips don’t believe in this sort of slacking and soldier on despite having to play to a miniscule audience. This sort of dedication has to be admired but it has to be said that they should have cancelled, as this sort of cabaret act really needs a bigger crowd.
While this sort of material (love, periods, masturbation etc) has been captured in humourous ditties before it does have a certain gravitas when it comes from a, how shall we put it, more mature duo. Their mixture of comedy and melancholy smacks of experience and is refreshing after hearing irksome students bleat about the same subjects but is still too tired a format to be truly brilliant.
That said Four Sets of Lips doesn’t try to be something it’s not; it’s just a fun, enjoyable show that’s worthy of a look.
