More! More! Miss Simpson!

2004

From the urban rhymes of a young Craig Charles to the classic couplets of Yeats and Byron, poetry can mean so many things to so many people. At best, a carefully scripted stanza will grip you and pluck at your feelings and at worst it will draw you back to the dreaded classroom where incomprehensible verses were learnt verbatim. Thankfully Jude Simpson’s is far more of the former than latter.

In a refreshing mix of song, stand up and poetry the bouncy, unflappable Miss Simpson lets us into her world of body image, protests and speed dating in a most upbeat and hilarious way. She manages to avoid the clichés and pitfalls that beleaguer many female comics to create a show that is not only highly amusing but amazingly uplifting as well.

While her stand up links are competent enough, it is her hip-hop like rhymes and verses that truly enchant the audience and make this show a winner.

More! More! Miss Simpson is definitely not a ”normal” Fringe show but a glorious hybrid of genres that could brighten up even the dullest day.
