A Midsummer Night’s Dream

2004

The thought of theatre being performed outside always brings some trepidation, particularly in summer in Scotland. However, the exciting thought of one of Shakespeare’s most universally loved plays being performed in the enchanting setting of Duddingston Kirk, prompted a wee journey - over hill, over dale, through bush, through briar, over (Holyrood) park, over pale, through (promised) flood, through fire (lightning) - to deepest, darkest Edinburgh.
It was worth the effort as Theatre Alba’s exceptional cast made a superb job of playing the Bard’s gentle comedy. Amongst the well versed cast, the roles of Helena (Emma Laidlaw), Hermia (Michelle Duncan), Oberon (Keith Hutchenson) and, of course, Bottom (James Sutherland) were particularly excellent, which the latter drawing tears of laughter from the audience for his comic performance. A mention must also be given to the ‘punk fairies’, who surely have a career as a girl rock band ahead of them, if they so wished.

The play is performed traditionally, which as a pure Shakespeare fan was good to see, with the Scots language only adding to the musical qualities of the prose.

Luckily the Scottish weather, for once, held out, with the rain only beginning during Bottom’s/Paramus’ overly dramatic suicide in the final act. Nevertheless, Theatre Alba valiantly battled on to conclude a very enjoyable evening, with a cast of excellent young actors that will draw me back to Theatre Alba’s productions during festivals to come.
