Balagan

2005

Though this performance is named Balagan, the Russian word for mess, no such disparaging or mundane word could ever be used to describe it. To watch Balagan is to enter an enchanted world that is built up in an incredible fusion of music, dance and acrobatics.

Like a daydream incarnate, Nataliya and Viktor Nebrat spring forth from a frozen wilderness lit by the radiance of Momo Kohlschmid, who seemingly hovers in angelic brilliance above them both. Momo’s voice fills the air with resonant song as the couple performs spellbinding feats of acrobatics with the slow and tender grace of a lover’s touch.

Dozens of performers seem to appear from the ever-changing backdrop, like a giant dollhouse or advent calendar transformed by the surreal images projected unto it. Each act is unique and most are nothing short of astonishing. From the enthralling music served up by the many talented musicians, including the impishly sexy Mark Chaet, to the hilarious but physically demanding acrobatic performance of Oktay and Telman Novruzov, Balagan is easily one of the most remarkable productions on the Fringe.

There are only two acts in the entire performance that fall short of the sheer excellence achieved in all the others. These acts break the flow of the production, if only for a moment that otherwise holds the audience enthralled.

Any chance of disappointment is however vaporised by the breathtaking energy and sensuality of Rimma Krillova’s performance. Her uncanny ability to control the golden hula-hoops orbiting her nubile body puts her entire audience into a awe-induced stupor.

Balagan is unlike any other show the Fringe has to offer and it is a privilege to see so many talented artists under the one roof, especially since that roof is the acoustically incredible dome of St George’s Church. You must see this show!
