Katy Brand: Celebrities Are Gods

2005

Given the prevalence of magazines like Heat and OK, it would seem like a show about celebrities would be right on the money just now but it seems like Katy Brand has missed a great opportunity with her new show.

Billed as an opportunity to meet with a host of top celebrities, Celebrities Are Gods is a distinctly hit and miss affair, with the majority of the sketches short.

This is unfortunate, as when Brand gets it right the take-offs are extremely funny but a lot of them simply descend into weirdness. She has shown that she can make cutting observations of celebrities’ characters but, instead, she largely insists in going down the same route as Avid Merrion with a bevy of off-kilter, nonsensical impressions.

Brand clearly has a good deal of talent and some great ideas but she hasn’t managed to amalgamate the properly yet and Celebrities Are Gods falls far short of the mark. Don’t discount her in coming years but it may be wise to steer clear of this year’s show.
