On paper the idea behind The Nigerian Spam Scam Scam is a fantastic one – to play these email fraudsters at their own game – but bringing it to life seems to be easier said than done, as Dean Cameron’s game of cyber cat and mouse falls short of mark.
While Cameron’s playful cyber-banter is all very amusing and entertaining, the delivery of the material is somewhat lacking, especially since it gives the impression of wanting to be an all singing, all dancing production. In fact, the presence of a huge projection screen in the middle of the stage is largely unwarranted and rather distracting.
In a time when we’ve seen some fabulous comedy routines that integrate technology perfectly, Cameron’s production seems amateurish at best and you can’t help but feel that the concept would’ve been better explored by Dave Gorman or Mark Thomas.
Nigerian Spam Scam Scam definitely has a lot of funny moments but these can all be found on the shows website. Some of this may be made more entertaining by the actors delivery but the gist of the scam can easily be enjoyed online.
