AAA Stand Up

2005

A group of three new comedians make an appearance at this years Edinburgh festival, bright, fresh and eager to please, but do they keep their promise to bring us ‘a dazzling hour of pure stand up comedy’?

First to take to the stage was Sally Anne Hayward. Her designated task, to warm up the crowd for her fellow comedians, a job, which at first, appeared to fall on deaf ears. However, this appeared to be more a result of a subdued audience rather than lack of comic talent as, despite a few run of the mill jokes, Sally’s slot was witty, and, on occasion, raised hoots of laughter.

Next up, a South African comic quick to play up to his appearance: “Hello everyone. I’m Martin Evans- NOT Jack Osbourne…” (to whom he does bear an alarming resemblance). He was able to draw laughter through his humorous anecdotes about his stay in Edinburgh - cue jokes about the city’s abundant chip shops, kebab houses and deep-fried mars bars. Evans’ act was reasonably funny but his performance lacked the flair to keep the crowd captivated.

It’s the final act, Pete Cain, who shines brightest. A droll character who brings a little bit of dark humour to the show, Cain’s views of our over-populated planet, inconsiderate drivers and London’s bus system are hilarious - he has a real talent and it was obvious the crowd appreciated his style of comedy.

This stand up show does have its high and low points but it is definitely worth the money. Take a look for yourself and enjoy!
