Copacabana

2006

There was blood and a single gunshot, but just who shot who?

Edinburgh Music Theatre performance present the action through the eyes of Stephen, a struggling song writer in present day Manhattan. He dreams up Lola and the other characters of the Copacabana club whilst trying to write his next big hit. The story is a classic tale of love and loss, good and evil; but it is brought colourfully to life by an enthusiastic cast, vibrant costumes and clever dance routines.

This show is a throwback to the halcyon days of 1940’s musicals. Full of glorious Technicolor and Busby Berkley style choreography, the stage is modestly dressed but the costumes and lighting add the right amount of glamour and glitz to the occasion. The main singers were excellent, with strong voices carrying them through a couple of wobbly mike moments, while the supporting cast kept the frenetic pace up throughout. Occasional hammy acting was buoyed up by a few visual surprises and some good comedy moments.

At the Copa, Copacabana. Music and passion is always in fashion, la la la laaaa. Even I went home singing.
