Karen Dunbar

2006

This isn’t “Chewin’ the Fat” or “The Karen Dunbar Show” so don’t go expecting anything like it. This is Karen Dunbar raw, and proud to be Scottish.

Her humor is more likened to that of a dirty old man at the office party than comical genius but her likable personality tips the balance in her favor and you’ll soon be laughing in you seat. It’s quick, dirty and to the point. Karen titters on the boundaries between good humor and offending but knows when a joke has sunk and moves quickly on.

Her opening gag is strong and gets everyone in the mood but you soon get the impression she is struggling to get through her material. With that said, the show should have been extended as her material does get very funny towards the later part of her performance when she eventually engages the audience and loosens up.

All in all the performance has an aspect of feeling like a warm up for better things to come. Hopefully next year she will return with a stronger format. All the ingredients are there but someone has forgotten to switch the oven on.
