Grandmotherf***er

2006

Ok, so this is not a show related to the obscure sexual preferences of Wayne Rooney. It is a show concerning the sexual preferences of a middle-aged lady. Not to mention, the ‘authorities’, cooking chickens, the Taliban, ex-husbands and mosquitoes. If this bizarre bundle floats your boat, read along.

Returning from her Edinburgh exile, for the first time since 2001, Pat Candaras graces the Underbelly with her considerable presence and acerbic wit. The show is impressive in its structure, delivering some excellent funnies regarding “straddling and flipping” as well as her lifelong aim “to be a regular lady”. One excellent joke about childhood as a prison term stands out.

If there is a downbeat it is the delivery, as Ms Candaras sometimes stumbles along, giving the impression that perhaps not everything is as well-thought out as the material would suggest. The jokes don’t exactly flow either, though they are worth the wait.

Issues of pace aside, Grandmothef***er leaves a warm impression.

2/5
