Fool

2006

Have you ever come out of a show and felt slightly cheated? Fool has gathered rave reviews, many of them praising their ‘talented and hilarious ’cast, and have even gone so far as to be awarded the much coveted 2004 Fringe First Winners award. God knows how because this show was about as funny as a three legged kitten.

The central premise involves Jesus returning to Earth and demanding a song in his name for reasons that are never really fully explained. The plot is more an excuse for a series of zany sketches and, credit where credit is due, there are some wonderful ideas in the show: a group of magical fairies begin picking on their tubbier friend or the cast of four wearing planets on their heads dance to a song. So, it is clear that the group have ideas to burn, which makes it all the more upsetting as they do not have either the wit or comedy timing to decently bring them to good terms. At 55 minutes your eyes start to roll into the back of your head, as each new scene is even less amusing than the last.

Fool really is an apt title for this production…mainly because that’s exactly what you feel like when you spend money to see this production.

2/5
