Natalie Haynes: Watching the Detectives

2006

Over the past few years, the world has become a dark and scary place, with problems too numerous to mention, but which could be summarised, according to Natalie Haynes, by the fact that everyone else is just stupid and annoying. But Haynes has a solution – bring in the American TV detectives to save the world!

She leads us through them one by one – Columbo, Quincy, Jessica Fletcher, Monk, Dr Sloane… seems all the usual suspects are there – and then she discusses the pros and cons of both their detection skills and world saving credentials, until we are left with the ultimate in potential world leaders.

If you are a fan of daytime TV this is definitely the show for you. Even if you’re not, Haynes’ sharp yet endearing performance should win you over. However be warned – if you are in any way fond of children you should perhaps steer clear, as Haynes certainly isn’t – intermittent rants about abortion, teenage gangs, and reintroducing paedophiles into the community prove the point.

Despite some controversial opinions, you can’t help warming to Haynes’ quirkiness, and it’s worth going along to see if your favourite detective makes the cut.

3/5
