Lord of the Flies

2006

This is an adaptation of William Goldings’ brutal and brilliant book where a plane crashes on an island and the only survivors are a group of young children. Forced to survive using any means necessary the group splits into those who descend into their primal instincts and those who cling onto their morals and run their side of the island through committee. It isn’t long before the two tribes are at war and the true nature of man is revealed.

Starring a host of pupils in years 7 and 8 from Feltonfleet School, what is instantly apparent is that despite their age many have a great command of their characters, managing to be quite believable to the audience as they wildly tear around the stage.

Praise also has to go to the simple yet highly effective stage design. Using clever props and imaginative lighting they suitably create an eerie mood in the forest, without needing to go overboard with the budget.

There are some problems with the production, as some of the kids begin to slip out of character during the slightly excessive run time and the volume of their voices also begins to dip. But in honesty, these are minor quibbles.

This is a show that comes highly recommended. Just be warned that you may be sitting next to the children’s proud parents who laugh and clap a little excessively throughout the entire production.

4/5
