One of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, taking place in one of Scotland’s most beautiful chapels - this show creates high expectations. And it does not disappoint.
Rosslyn Chapel lends itself beautifully as a setting, with scenes taking place both outside and inside the chapel itself. Lit simply with candles and a single green light, the shadows cast by the great carved pillars make it easy to imagine yourself lost in the forest along with the characters. The actors make good use of the many entrances, dashing in and out as if stumbling upon a hidden glen, and the wonderful acoustics mean every word rings out clearly.
The cast themselves are all extremely talented, and despite each member playing more than one character, there is never any confusion as with the simplest of costume changes they manage to transform themselves into the distinctive personalities. They all give extremely energetic and physical performances, which bring to life the humour of this particular play.
This truly is a magical performance, and it is worth splashing out on the more expensive tickets (£25 compared with £10) as these include a Q & A session with the cast, a buffet, and a tour of Rosslyn Chapel following the performance. But be quick, as tickets are (rightly) selling out quickly.
