Get Carter

2006

This is a gangster’s tale of revenge and shifting loyalties as Jack Carter begins to suspect that his brother’s death is more than just a tragic accident, and returns back to his home turf with devastating consequences. Get Carter is a legendary piece of British cult cinema and Red Shift have done a fantastic job of reinterpreting a thirty year old script for the stage.

This really is an exceptional show and right from the second it begins you realise that they have managed to capture the filthy and grimy mood of the film perfectly. Everything looks and sounds flawless, from the awesome 60’s soundtrack to the stunningly choreographed fight scenes, made all the more real as blood spurts up walls and narrowly misses the front rows feet. The production is also confident enough to alter the story and features some key plot changes and full frontal nudity, something that bizarrely really add to the shows disturbing mood.

The acting is exceptional from each of the cast, however as it is an intimate group of six, each has to play several characters, which does lead to some genuine head scratching moments throughout the production. But don’t let that put you off as this is a gut wrenchingly brutal adaptation that I urge you to see immediately.

5/5
