Maria Bamford

2006

Dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, the 5ft tall Bamford nervously walks out onto the stage and subconsciously tries to hide behind her bright blonde scraggly hair. First impressions are not spectacular, but then she opens up her mouth and a uniquely odd voice comes out that instantly charms you, mainly because that is her very own voice and you could listen to it all day.

Her routine works by her brilliant ability to turn the mundane into something weird and the weird into the hilarious. Her story of meeting her archenemy from high school descends into madness but keeps the audience in stitches.

Aside from her great stories she is also very gifted with mimicking voices and just as well as her show has her flitting back and forward with a host of made-up characters.

This is a performance peppered with highly intelligent observations and social quirks, and it’s an amusing hour trying to second guess were Bamford’s topic will go next.

The act is not without flaws though, some rambling stories don’t manage to go anywhere and the finale is a disappointment as the show abruptly stops rather than reaching a proper conclusion.

This is witty, charming and utterly unique comedy experience that comes all the way from the other side of pond.

4/5
