Rebecca Carrington – Many Ways To Play Your Lover

2006

Rebecca and Joe have had a love relationship for about 30 years. She is funny, beautiful, talented and has an amazing personality. He… well, he is a 230-something year old cello.

From Scotland to Africa (passing by Spain, Japan and Ireland, amongst other countries), they have travelled the world trying to fit in. Rebecca’s show, tells us of all her attempts to adapt to the different cultures’ music, while at the same time playing samples of these with only her instrument and her voice.

Her work is astonishingly good, as she can imitate almost any instrument using only her cello, and throughout the one hour show, she plays Bollywood music, Spanish typical fiesta sounds, Portuguese Fado (The girl from Ipanema, anyone?) or African beats. Not only does she sing them and even act out some of them (her French impersonation is uncanny) but she tells you a little story about her living in all these different places.

What is even more amusing is that she can also play Madonna, The Black Eye Peas, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears hits with Joe as his only companion! It’s a pity though, that some of these gems are lost in the middle of an over-aged audience who think they are going to see a cello solo concert.

Rebecca Carrington shouldn’t be confined to a small stage on the Assembly Rooms. She deserves a room like the gigantic music hall, and a young audience like that one of Danny Bhoy or Adam Hills; an audience that can marvel and appreciate the blend of comedy, irony and music abilities that Carrington possesses and uses to perfection. She might carry the world’s music in her instrument’s case, but the whole world should be at her feet.
