Adventure Fantastique!

2007

The Durham Review’s latest Fringe offering is a sketch show that will appeal to your inner child. Unfortunately though this might leave your inner adult feeling under stimulated and unimpressed…

Adventure Fantastique is a mixed-bag of sketches that satirise early adventure movies, colonial explorers and a host of other kitsch themes. Like Bill Murray’s movie ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’ this production draws from the rich comedic material to be found within these genres however much of this potential is left untapped.

The show has the audience chuckling regularly but despite the tongue in cheek style in which it is done, the humour comes across as being a bit on the juvenile side. For this reason the show seems to be a smash hit with the younger members of the audience who are beside themselves with laughter throughout the length of the show.

The five fresh faced performers who comprise this group are clearly talented but this production does not stretch them enough to show this off. There is not enough within this production to set this group apart from the crowd.

If you are looking for a safe comedy to take your kids to or like your comedy light and unthreatening this could be the show for you.

2/5
