Aeneas Faversham Returns

2007

There are dozens of sketch shows littered through out the fringe, but Aeneas Faversham Returns is well above the competition. Aeneas Faversham Returns is a warped mix of the more unusual elements from The League of Gentlemen and stirring it into the Victorian world of mummy’s and the British. It’s an intriguing combination but it works extremely well.

The show pushes its absurd humour to the very limits: from a man injured on the battlefield who forces his friend to pass on a very, very long message word for word straight through, to a completely naked gentleman streaking across the stage because he’s convinced he’s invisible. This is a very funny show that is peppered with ingenious touches and expertly performed by the four young leads.

The audience are delighted with the twisted sketches and it’s just a shame that the whole act seems to swing from amazing to enjoyable by the end of the hour. Some of the sketches really need to be swapped around, and the grand finale is completely forgettable.

But, on the whole, this is a show that constantly surprises with its off the wall ideas and if they could just up the quality control, then another star would easily be awarded to them.

3/5
