Comedy Club 4 Kids

2007

Let’s get one thing straight and out of the way: making kids laugh is no easy task. They are like a bunch of drunken old men, who you have to keep entertained and amused or they will rebel and over power you. At the best of luck, they will slightly smirk if they like your joke, but if they don’t, you will hear their wrath. It is because of this that it is left to the parents to cheer, sing or clap whenever any of the comedians are on stage. It’s their way of thanking the actors for entertaining, if briefly, their kids for an hour.

Comedy Club 4 Kids tries to do this but, as hard as it may try, it never really fulfils its task. The show is based on three different comedy acts held together by Micky D acting as a host. As each night there are different comedians, it is very much pot luck on what you are getting. And while Micky D might be funny-ish and does try his best, his jokes about Australia (his country of origin) fall flat.

Kids don’t seem to want acts that play with words, or inventive punch lines and funny one-liners. They are more entertained when visuals are involved, when their parents and grandparents are the brunt of the jokes, or when the comedians feel the need to shout and make funny noises on stage.

Highly irritating for adults, slightly entertaining for kids, Comedy Club 4 Kids might be too clever for its own good. A kid would much rather see a clown getting splashed with a cake than a man attempting to make jokes about girls and firemen.
