All Daily Mail Writers Must Die

2007

Mostly stand-up comedy, partly personal anecdote, ‘All Daily Mail Writers Must Die’ is an unashamed and self professed vehicle for Smith’s personal and political points of view. (In his own words: “To combat bigotry with humor”) Although a relatively new-comer to stand up, Smith excels in interacting with his audience, something which the small and stage-less (and somewhat sauna-like).

C Cubed Temple venue makes almost unavoidable. The show is funny, and there should be no surprises from the title in which way Smith’s personal politics, and humor, leans. And although there are more controversial acts at this year’s festival, this may not be one to see with your parents.

The humor is sometimes inter-cut with recounts of not so amusing personal experienced, such as a disturbing story were he helplessly watched on as a friend got beaten up for being Polish, the quiver in his voice reminding the audience that unlike most stand-ups tales, this is a very real tale.

The only real problems are the somewhat forced transitions between jokes, something which detracts from a show which seems it would prefer being an unscripted rambling monologue, and that at only thirty-five minutes long, it all feels over a little too quickly.
