Debbie Does Dallas – The Musical

2007

Who knew that in 1978 a mob-funded erotic film, Debbie Does Dallas, would grow to become one of the most commercially successful adult films ever produced. Since it featured a weak plot, poor acting and basic cinematography, no one really went to see it for its artistic value, but to marvel at the cheer leaders in very little clothes. Notorious and ripe for self parody it has now been made into a highly successful and inventive musical. Rude and proud of it, Debbie Does Dallas – The Musical delights the audience knowing all to well that its tongue is firmly placed in its cheek. The show delivers some great little smutty tunes, like ‘I wanna do Debbie’ or ‘The dildo rag’, which, despite the humour, are surprisingly composed and delivered.

It’s clear that the actors are having a great time and you can see they have put a hundred percent into their performance as they sing, dance and get up to increasingly ruder things. The play uses many of the lines from the film, and this can perhaps be a little too much for some audience members, though it is expected to shock and go over the line in places, with a title like this.

Fun, perverted and highly enjoyable, with the exception of a flabby finale that outstays its welcome, this is a brilliant night out.

4/5
