Francesca Martinez: In Deep

2007

Francesca Martinez returns to the Edinburgh Fringe after a sell out show 5 years ago. In that time she has had a hilarious appearance on Extras and been nominated as one of Channel 4’s top 100 comedians. You would then expect great things… but you leave disappointed.

In Deep moves away from topics explored in Martinez’ previous sell out show: herself and disability. This is a pity because the funniest parts of the show are those where she returns to these themes, discussing, for example, “coming out” as disabled and whether PC language improves anything – would it have felt better to be taunted by school bullies as “differently abled” rather than “spastic”?

The remainder of the show explores Martinez’ views on politics and terrorism among other things. There are some witty one-liners but so many people are taking a shot at George W. Bush that the material just isn’t original enough to captivate, despite Martinez’ charisma and perfect delivery.

In fairness, she is battling against the constrictions of the venue. The Stand 2 is a smaller venue round the corner from the stand. It’s the kind of place you’d hold a séance according to Martinez, although apparently it is usually the SNP social club! It’s probably cosy and intimate at night but in the early evening on a summer’s day it is a bit stuffy.

To sum up, In Deep has moments of brilliance where Francesca Martinez really shines, but her personality is stronger than the material so, unless you are a huge fan, it might not hold your attention.

2/5
