Jason Byrne

2007

Every comedian has bad days, bad shows or bad routines. It even happens to the best of them too. The thing with Byrne is that, even when he is not having a particularly great day, he is still a hundred times funnier than many of the other stand-up acts populating the Fringe magazine every year.

Without an overall theme that entwines his routine, Byrne knows how to work with his audience and leave them asking for more. Either, when he’s talking about his two kids or his wife, poking fun at different audience’s nationalities or making a 19-years-old youngster run around the stage, Byrne’s tongue is sharp and calculated, giving some of the best puns and one-liners.

His show may have some unnecessary moments, mainly his levitation trick which involves two members of the public, but even those ones are still funny enough to be forgiven. And although rehearsed and pre-planned, Byrne has the ability to make the show feel as if it is all improvised, leaving a sense of freshness and uniqueness which not many others can.

Byrne is always and always will be a sure bet, and this year his routine doesn’t fail to deliver.

4/5
