If you are looking for a comedy show to take your parents to, then this could be the one for you. As Jon Richardson says himself, he is the kind of man that girlfriends’ parents like more than the girlfriends themselves.
Essentially, Jon Richardson is an angry 70 year old man, in the body of a 25 year old. The title of the show, Dogmatic, is a word that Jon found in the dictionary to define his character: “a person that asserts opinions, who can not be swayed by rational argument.” And Jon likes to argue… to the extent that he now lives on his own. Instead, he invents, or rather is possessed by, characters that live with him…who he inevitably argues with. Taking the audience into the world created inside his head provides a rich seam of comedy, as they can’t help but laugh at Jon’s imaginary conversations with a very believable Polish migrant, despite concerns about his mental health.
There are slow patches in the show when Jon gets swept up in his own vision of how Britain should be, or is distracted by something happening in his own little world and loses the thread of what he was saying. His attempts to interact with the audience produce some awkward silences, which he quickly skips over and carries on making his arguments. However, his personal anecdotes work wonderfully well and the audience’s generous laughter is a sure sign that they have stuck with him to the end of the show.
