Andrew Lawrence – Don’t Just Do Something, Sit There!

2008

Despite the title suggesting a show aimed at Generation X slackers, and the fact that Andrew Lawrence subscribes to the view that life is nasty, brutish and short, the age diverse audience all appear to have a very jolly time. Lawrence tells us at the end of his show that he is concerned by a review that finds his outlook on life too negative. From his point of view he has a positive message, which is that whilst the challenges of life are considerable, we should not be afraid to be ourselves and work much less.
He warms up to his topic by insulting himself rather harshly and then chastising the audience for laughing a bit too much. Having got the public on side with extreme self deprecation, he is free to turn his hatred on others. Out of his small frame come a string of incredible insults towards the uglier (both physically and spiritually) members of society at such a pace that the audience barely have time to laugh at one before the next horrible image is planted in their minds.
He does not try to interact with the audience, as he freely admits to a complete lack of social skills. However, the audience clearly warm to this self conscious, odd looking, depressed, frail little guy, who wants us to join him in sticking it to the man. If he is not careful, ambition will catch up with him and make him far too successful for his own liking.
