Based on ‘The Undefeated’, one of three stories from Irvine Welsh’s 1996 novel Ecstasy, this piece centres around Lloyd (Jack McGowan), a thirty something clubber who lives only for the weekends where his chemical induced highs make him feel like he can finally be himself, as he hits the clubs and the after parties of the Edinburgh 90’s rave culture.
Lloyd’s story becomes entwined with Heathers (Maddy Lewis) a woman who thought she had it all with her successful husband and posh friends, until she starts to go to the clubs and realises just how mundane her life has become.
Well performed by the entire cast this alternative look at one of the 90’s subcultures manages to entertain but rarely surprise. The actors, despite some fairly poor Leith accents, play a host of multiple roles creating a twisted and funny world of warped characters, the highlight being a clubber who finds Jesus, not through the normal Christian means but instead literally throwing some shapes on the dance floor next to him.
Filled with familiar rave tunes this production has missed a trick by failing to light its stage like a club would, instead the space feels underused, which s a pity since this is a performance were the vast majority is set in night clubs.
Despite this, this is a dark, funny tale that many thirty some-things will be able to resonate with.
