Rhod Gilbert is always a safe bet. When you are stuck on what stand up to see, you know he will deliver the laughs, you will have a very enjoyable hour and you will go home feeling like money well spent.
Although his shows tend to be rambling about things from the top of his head, this year Gilbert has decided to be honest, to come to the real world, ‘our world’, and tell things as they are. And since he decided to live in the real world, instead of his imaginary one, he lives on the edge of a panic attack. He simply can not cope. Motorway petrol stations, duvet buying, dealing with his mother… It has all become too much for him, and that’s why he blames the award winning pie which gives name to his show.
It all makes sense really, if you see the show, but be prepared for a bumpy ride as he changes stories mid sentence, shouts, sweats… The real world is not doing him much good.
The show is excellent anyways, just as it always is (he is, like we said, a safe bet), but sometimes the way he delivers the jokes is rushed, nonsensical, and it looses some of its power. The audience do love him, and he knows how to get great banter out of them, but that panic attack waiting to happen might come sooner than expected.
If only he relaxed a little bit, if he didn’t rushed into the punch-line, he wouldn’t be just a safe bet, but the best bet you could ever place.
