The Fringe is full of alternative versions of Shakespeare but a hip-hop retelling has to be one of the most interesting. Never could you have imagined that the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre could so flawlessly fuse classic and contemporary styles. They retell, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ through the medium of Rap and Hip Hop beats creating a comic spectacular that captures the bard’s original intent for the story beautifully. Very few Shakespeare adaptations can take pride in having the entire audience erupting into a standing ovation at the end.
The cast perform a tight energetic show that works on many levels. There is an obvious subtle comedy, both visual and verbal, which has the audience bent over double at points.
Sensational and thrilling, this is an adult production that is littered with explicit language and visual sexual references. So anyone hoping to educate their children into the world of Shakespeare may get more than they bargained for!
This production is guaranteed to surprise and delight and may only upset some of the more die hard Shakespeare fans, expecting to hear the originally verse and iambic pentameter but these are all but forgotten used only occasionally as a story telling devise.
However, don’t let these things stop you going, this is a MUST SEE.
