Sometimes it’s nice to take a welcome break between the cerebral theatre productions and the noisy comedians out there and Soccer Moms fits perfectly between the two. This is a light hearted satire on the American pushy mother’s cliché. It follows two bitchy women who will do literally anything for their daughters to succeed, even selling their souls.
Held in the tiny, Turret venue in the Gilded Balloon, audience members in the front should take heed that they are mere inches from the performer’s space and one would imagine that late comers could not be admitted as they would have to walk across the stage. But despite the unusual venue the actors manage to bring a fun and entertaining show to the crowd.
Well performed by all, Uma Incrocci and Yvonne Roen do a fine job as the back stabbing duo but the best performance comes from Michael Whitney as the ever grinning Lucifer, who brings a splash of camp menace to the proceedings, staring you dead in the eye as he quips.
Though the plot is nothing revolutionary it does playfully move into some dark directions and is helped out by some nice comedic touches throughout. The highlight being in the final moments when the devil takes physical control of both the women and like puppets makes them perform for the audience.
Fun rather than funny this is an enjoyable hour that never takes itself too seriously. Leave your brain at the door and enjoy.
