Bale de Rua combines music, live percussion and dance from a hugely talented Brazilian group. They incorporate modern dance, Capoeira and hip hop; all superbly executed.
Bale de Rua is introduced as a show which tells the story of Brazil. The choreography is fantastic and the dancers are hugely talented but, as a story, it doesn’t quite flow. There is little direction or thread to link the pieces together. However, each of the pieces works well as a stand alone dance, and the fact that the dancers are wearing just underwear for much of the show is enough to hold many people’s attention! It is just a pity that it isn’t the uplifting, dancing in the aisles type of show that many expect. Perhaps this is down to the music choice – the backing tracks are not overly engaging and at one point includes pre-recorded applause and whistles. Given the wealth of amazing Brazilian music out there, the company could have chosen tracks which would have encouraged the audience to clap along instead.
The show is enjoyable, and worth seeing if you are more interested in dance than music. Make sure you get there early though, as many of the seats at assembly have restricted viewing and you certainly won’t want to miss anything given the price of the tickets.
