The Oxford Imps are a mixture between Oxford Student and professionals, have been bringing their delightful improvised lunacy to the Edinburgh Fringe for five years running, but with no two shows ever being the same they are more than welcome to come back for another five. For the Imps are quite simply, bloody brilliant.
Guided by a task master who selects specific imps to perform a scene and then with audience input, the fun and games come thick and fast. From made up on the spot songs about coconuts, to doing their very best with some downright stupid audience suggestions, the crowd were in stitches. Credit where credits due these guys think up some incredible, random scenarios but also manage to jam pack the production full of great jokes and frantic energy.
While they excel at bouncing ideas off one another, the highlight is an improvisation face off, where each Imp, with a point of the finger by the task master then has to continue talking about what the last performer has said. Any hesitation or stuttering is met with heckles from the cheering crowd and the Imp must then commit suicide in a mime of his choice.
As with all improvisation, some work beautifully while others simply out stay there welcome but there is lots of fun to be had. The Oxford Imps deliver a fast, entertaining and chaotic hour that will have you rolling about aisles laughing.
So good, you may be tempted to go back.
