Midnight variety shows should give up. When Adam Hills and Jason Byrnes get together for their 4-shows only run, the competition has lost from the go.
That Byrne and Hills are masters at stand up just states the obvious, and their CV just proves that they are (together or on their own) the best the Fringe has to offer.
Their midnight show follows the basics of having them as comperes, and inviting an array of performers on stage. The show peaks whenever both presenters are in the spotlight, as their chemistry is undeniable, their jokes fast and they have the whole auditorium in a constant state of laughter.
As with any show of these characteristics, the guests’ acts can vary, and do indeed vary each night, with the added difference that Hills and Byrne don’t just get sent random artists that are performing in the Fringe, but they actually choose who they want, and obviously go for their mates, which adds a sense of camaraderie and familiarity.
So they get David O’Doherty, who excels in his stand up, and amuses with his trademark songs; or Des Bishop, a real discovery, who has the audience rapping along with him. Even Johnny Carr makes a surprise five minute entrance.
Highlight of the night though? Seeing Adam Hills and Jason Byrne with a spoon up their nose. You had to be there to believe it. Then again, we should be all getting a ticket for each of their night performances, since each night promises to be a real rollercoaster of a ride.
