Alysa Kyria: Woman Of The Year?

2008

This one woman show is not really the best character comedy act there is out there this Fringe. Alyssa does fail to give as many laugh out loud moments as other shows, but she still does give you a few.
As Alyssa plays more than one character in the show it sometimes does take a while to change from scene to scene, but never worry as she has put up videos throughout the performance when she is changing, to connect each character together, which does make it a little bit tedious but less boring than watching nothing while she changes. Kyria does seem to bicker with her grandmother a lot through the show which gets rather tiresome, as she uses this as an excuse more than once to get ready for the next character coming on stage.
Each character is very well played and Alyssa is very enthusiastic when performing but the show in itself is generally not really funny, though she does have a few “sit on my face” comments, which the audience seem to love.
Even though Alyssa is likable in the show there is just no shine or connection between her and the audience. The length of this show is perfect for what it is, and though it doesn’t quite meet up to expectations, Alyssa could be an act to look out for next year, if she just works on her show a bit more.
