With a cast of five, I Love You… pretends to summarise relationships into a one hour show, full of different musical sketches. You get them all, the insecurities when starting to see someone, the sex-addiction of the honey moon period, the doubts on the wedding day…
4TUNE Theatre Company have made an excellent job at adapting this musical, and all performers have a fantastic voice, a wonderful charisma and some great chemistry. The different roles they play are stereotypes of everyday men and women, but they don’t fall into the caricature, and instead are finely created and well acted as to see their true feelings and emotions. While the main focus is on the lyrics, without such a stupendous cast to re-enact them, they could fall flat and meaningless. Instead, with their cheeky glances to the audience and their perfectly timed slapstick, all five performers bring these characters to life. You believe the sincerity in their gestures, and their voices.
Kudos should go to the musicians as well, who are not just on stage oblivious to the action, playing their instruments, but interact during the show with their cheeky grins, and facial expressions.
There might be more than one group performing I Love You… on the Fringe, but these are the ones to see. Their sold out shows prove it.
