Having performed all over, from the Adelaide Fringe Festival to the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal, Andrew Stanley returns to the festival this year with his second solo show. And, this time, he’s taking us online while having a laugh at ebay.
“I’m online a lot,” he tells me, “so it was the easiest way for me to be lazy and to research my show at the same time”. He quickly assures me that he’s joking, but I’m not quite sure I believe him. “I spent so much time looking about the site as a result of trying to buy things, and I thought there is lots here to be shown and talked about”. Apparently the shopping started when Andrew’s laptop broke and he attempted to find a cheap replacement on the auction site. We’re all pretty much aware of this auction site, but Andrew seems to have found the weird and wonderful that most of us miss. “I found a guy who was selling strands of his hair so that when they perfect cloning you can, in his own words, ‘recreate the perfect specimen’.” Hopefully his show will give audiences a laugh, rather than encouraging this sort of behaviour.
What, exactly though, would passionate ebayers make of his show? “I like that term ‘Passionate Ebayers’”, he laughs, “I would like to meet one of the people just to see if they like being called Ebayers. I mean someone who shops in Tesco a lot isn’t a Passionate Tescoer now are they?” It’s a fair point, I suppose, but what about those who don’t use the site? “It will be funny enough that they’ll like it too,” he assures me.
And while it’s not clear if it came from ebay or not, he did eventually get a new laptop.
