This troupe of talented young adults have taken on a classically entertaining musical and added more colour to it than a bag full of Skittles. Their energy is contagious and it is hard not to feel a part of the show – especially with catchy numbers like “Sit Up! Lie Down! Roll Over! Play Dead!” and “Don’t Be Anything Less Than Everything You Can Be”.
Particularly impressive are the vocal abilities of the young actors, students from Oakham College, many of whom are part of the National Youth Theatre group. They have the kind of talent that makes you proud by proximity; the kind that makes you expect to see them performing at the West End very shortly.
However, the two shining stars of this show are the actors playing Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown. Their performances are incredibly thoughtful and show maturity beyond their years, and the confidence in their characters is reflected by the young girl who plays Sally Brown. All three seem to buzz with excitement in every scene, but somehow convert that excitement into an even-paced and balanced performance.
Although it perhaps lacks in some more obvious costume accessories for Snoopy and Woodstock, it doesn’t make it any less of a brilliant way to spend a morning at the Edinburgh Fringe. As Lucy says, “At this time of year, some stars are big and some stars are little.” Well, these little stars are really starting to shine.
Snoopy!!! A show so enjoyable it more than earns its three exclamation marks.
