Ranked by Larry Flynt’s Hustler magazine as one of the Top 50 Most Influential People in Porn, John Simon Lindsay Honey, better known to many as his lewd and filthy persona, Ben Dover, is taking a break from his porn empire to come to the Edinburgh Festival.
Starting in the business aged just17, Dover has starred and directed in close to nearly 150 erotic movies in his 40 years in the sex industry. If you have the mind set and stomach to deal with the graphic details about anal scenes gone wrong, pubic hair good or bad, and the merits of oral sex there is lots of fascinating, filthy and surprisingly hilarious fun to be had, as he rattles off anecdote after anecdote on the unsuspecting audience.
Vulgar and proud, Ben Dover will either have you rolling in the aisles with laughter or running for the exit, for there is little to recommend to the prudish among you. His depraved tales are what make the performance and only when he tries to slip in off-the-cuff, groan inducing jokes(‘Do you like my new Silver suite? I stole it from Graham Norton’) into his set do you see that Ben Dover is a better porn star than comedian. He just about gets away with it though, playfully bantering with the audience about their favourite sexual positions and proudly showing off his latest Ben Dover sex toys.
Worth the ticket alone just to watch the audience members who either wince at every punch line or worryingly seem to eagerly agree with everything he says, this is a gloriously depraved hour.
